چکیده

El Ghawabi, S. H., Mansour, M. B., Youssef, F. L., El Ghawabi, M. H., and Abd El Latif, M. M. (1971). Brit. J. industr. Med., 28, 323-329. Decompression sickness in caisson workers. An investigation of 55 bridge construction workers is reported. The overall bends rate was 097 %. (The term 'bends' as used in this study is defined in the paper.) Chokes were encountered in 67-27% of workers. A clinical, haematological, and radiological study was performed. Definite bony changes were found in 43-6% of all workers; 91-6% of these had lesions around the elbow. The presence of dense areas in the neck of the scapula is reported in two cases for the first time. The relatively high haematocrit value is thought to play a part in the pathogenesis of bone infarction through its relation with blood viscosity.

Caisson disease during the construction of the Eads and Brooklyn Bridges: A review.

The Eads Bridge (St. Louis) and the Brooklyn Bridge (New York City) were testing grounds for caisson construction. These caissons were enormous compressed air boxes used to build riverine piers and abutments anchoring the bridges. Caisson meant faster and cheaper construction, but there was a hidden cost---caisson disease (decompression sickness). Within caissons, workers labored at pressures a...

General history of vestibular disorders in diving.

Cmt Kennedy K. S. 1974. General history ot vestibular disorders in diving. Undersea Biomed. Res. ^rC '(I): 73-81.-The history of vestibular symptomatology in hyperbaria is reviewed. Most of this literature deals with vertigo as a symptom of decompression sickness in divers and caisson workers, although other symptoms (e.g. nystagmus, staggers), other influences (compression, mixed gases), and o...

Decompression sickness during the sinking of a caisson; a study of some factors in the pathogenesis of caisson disease.

Most of the studies of decompression sickness in industry have been made during the construction of tunnels. The sinking of a caisson, however, is a much briefer undertaking involving certain special features not encountered in tunnel work. Work of this type has received relatively little attention in recent years, although caisson sinking is performed all over the world. This paper describes a...

Goodbye Decompression Sickness

by T.J.R. Francis, D.J. Smith and J.J. W. Sykes, Institute of Naval Medicine, Hampshire, England. The current means by which we classify decompression sickness dates back only 30 years to the experience gained during the construction of the Dartford Tunnel in London. Golding et al [1] proposed a system for decompression sickness based upon perceived severity of the cases which arose in the cais...

Health outcome following multi-day occupational air diving.

Acclimatization to decompression stress has been reported in caisson workers and helium-oxygen divers; however the alternative notion that the risk of decompression sickness increases with successive days of diving is widespread. We examined 201 multi-day series of 2 to 29 diving days identified retrospectively in a database of occupational air dives for evidence of acclimatization or sensitiza...
